Glaze Practicum, Wednesday Evenings, October 11th through November 8th 5 - 7 Pacific Time
The glaze practicum is a series of 5 classes for people who have never made glaze before, and for people who have a bit of experience but want a support network and more info to get launched into finding their own personal glaze palette.
I have been making glazes and doing glaze testing since 1994, and I have taught glaze classes in college settings, art centers, and online for years. I teach the all of the tips and tricks that I have learned, and give a guided tour through what can seem like a daunting endeavor. As a teacher, I simplify the complex, and I lead a path through the unending and contradictory information about glaze making, teaching my methodologies and my understanding of how to get good glaze surfaces. Basically, I show you what works for me, exactly the steps I have taken to develop my own glaze palette, which is made up of cone 6 oxidation glaze bases that I fire to just under cone 9.
I cover everything I can think of and will answer all questions, including firing, programming kilns, and even loading kilns. I show you how I make glaze and even give glazing demos.
When we meet on Wednesday evenings via Zoom, I will give a lesson and everyone will have the chance to ask questions and ask for further explanation in real time. I will also put up an online classroom on an app called Slack. The online classroom is the place where I will post all the goodies: the documents and charts and recipes that participants can download and print up. As a participant, you can post questions for me there whenever they occur to you, have discussions with your classmates, and post pictures of your glaze tests as they come out of the kiln. It will be a super-supportive and encouraging environment.
I will be recording the classes and posting them in Teachable for you to review later or for those who can't actually attend the classes or who might miss a class. You will have access to the classes and info indefinitely on Teachable.
Cost: $165
What this class is:
-Practical instruction of my method of glaze testing and color development
-Supportive environment with a leader and a group of your peers on the same journey
-Real time advice, based on my knowledge of glaze materials on things to try next in your testing for your glazing goals
-Online conference video calls with the whole class, and individual video chats, if needed, for troubleshooting, and recordings of the classes afterward.
-A Slack team online resource, which is a free app that allows me to post handouts, pictures and other instructional materials, and where the class can text-chat, share photos, post questions, etc, at any time…(I will add participants to the classroom a few days before the class starts. You will receive an email invitation from Slack, which will guide you through the steps to get set up)
What you will need:
- computery things and a home network that allows you to use Zoom and Slack, and tech support on your side to get those things up and running before the first class so you can participate!
-glaze materials, whichever ones called for in the recipes that you want to try
- a triple beam balance or a digital scale with the capacity for measuring in grams
-the proper safety equipment, ie a particulate mask and disposable gloves
-a suitable studio space to mix glazes that has ventilation and can be thoroughly cleaned
-A kiln for the firing of your glaze tests, if you don't have your own kiln, you will need permission from the owner of the kiln you are using
-lots of little plastic containers for your glaze tests and some larger ones for glaze bases
-glaze test screen & brush
-a meticulous nature and a sense of adventure
What this class is not:
-Access to my personal glaze recipes currently used in my line of tableware
-Easy, effort-free method to find glazes that you like – there is no shortcut to actually doing the work
-a guarantee of a complete glaze pallet by the end of the session
-tech support for your computer or network or streaming issues – I am a potter, so my knowledge in this area is limited!
